Pain Under Your Right Rib Cage

There are many possible reasons for this ailment. The following is an overview of the possible causes and remedies.

Causes of Pain Under Right Rib Cage

The pain could be symptomatic of another health condition. Some of the possible reasons could be gallbladder disease. In this case, there’s also sharp pain in the chest area. Another possible cause is peptic ulcer. Gastritis could manifest itself via pain near the abdomen.

Appendicitis could be the reason too. It often strikes children and young adults (males 10 to 15 mostly). If the pain is chronic and extends to the upper back, it could be indicative of pancreatitis. Other reasons could be rib fractures.

The pain could also be due to wrong exercise routines. Putting too much stress on that particular area might overexert the muscles. This might cause some throbbing pain.

The sensation can be dull or severe. Sometimes the pain will last for only a few seconds. Other times it will be for longer periods. The disparity is due to the underlying cause.

If it’s due to a fractured rib the pain will be almost constant. If it’s due to gallbladder or diarrhea, the aches will be intermittent.

Billiary disease could be the cause too. Apart from abdominal pain, there is vomiting and feelings of nausea. In the case of Biliary disease the aches will be in the upper middle abdominal section. Heartburn may be present as well as chest pain. This would be near the breastbone.

Pain Under Right Rib Cage Diagnosis

A diagnosis will include questions about the patient’s medical history. This will help identify any other potential causes. Other questions will be the type of pain. Does it linger? Was it fleeting? Did it feel like a stabbing sensation?

What the patient was doing will also be determined. If it occurred during exercise or heavy lifting, the activity would be the likely suspect.

If the pain seemed more like cramps, the diet may be questioned. Some foods cause gas pains. This may be the reason. If needed, an X-ray will be performed. Other possible tests include an MRI or CT scan. If it’s gallbladder, blood chemistry tests may be conducted.

Pain Under Right Rib Cage Relief

If it’s due to fatigue, you should just rest. Applying some muscle ointment relaxant will help. Hot or cold compresses may provide relief. There are also over the counter pain relievers you can try.
Lessening sugar intake might help.

Lessen the carbohydrates and eat more protein rich foods. Do not drink alcoholic beverages. Reduce intake of pasta, bread and other sweets. Replace those sodas and soft drinks with water. Try eating mostly chicken, fish and vegetables. This may eliminate the discomfort.

If the pain persists, have an ultrasound and a urine test. You can also ask for prescription pain relievers. But if it’s due to injury, have an X-ray performed. If positive, go to a doctor to get treatment.

The pain under right rib cage can be very bothersome but there are ways to treat it. Always go see a doctor if the pain persists in spite of diet changes and taking long rests.
